Solar and the Super Bowl

Did you know both teams in this year’s Super Bowl hail from solar-powered stadiums? The Patriots’ Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts has 1 MW solar capacity, and The Seahawks’ CenturyLink Field in Seattle has 800 kW of solar installed.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) recently published a fact sheet on solar-powered sports arenas, looking at football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and NASCAR facilities. Clean Technica has a list of sports teams with solar, with details of each installation.

New Yorkers can be proud that the New York Jets Training Center and MetLife Stadium are solar-powered, with a combined solar capacity of over 1 MW. Other solar-powered east coast facilities include Lincoln Financial Field, Pocono Raceway, FedEx Field, and Fenway Park.

EmPower’s Solar Engineer, Joe Rice, shared an article from USA Today with our team this morning about green initiatives throughout the country’s stadiums, including rainwater harvesting, solar carports, wind turbines, and LEED design.

Here’s to another reason to love a sunny day at the stadium!
