“At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate… The response waselectric. It took off like gangbusters”¦ The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air – and they did so with spectacular exuberance.
Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

Description: In celebration of Earth Day, Farmingdale State College presents an Energy Symposium, organized by the FSC Solar Energy Center, the symposium addresses the challenges and opportunities in distributed generation to an audience of solar contractors, faculty, staff, students and the general public. Please mail a check for $20 made out to Farmingdale State College to the following address by April 15, 2009 at the latest. Seats are limited Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students with valid student identification can register for a fee of $10.

Description: Sayville’s 19th annual Earth Day includes a solar event featuring the installation of a solar electric photovoltaic system on the Sayville Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, donated by Sun Power Systems, sponsored in part by Sayville Chamber of Commerce and Long Island Solar Energy Industries Association, with continuous green seminars throughout the day, finishing with a ceremony at 3:00 p.m. with the support of local politicians.
