The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) authorized a solar rebate increase last week that is currently available to commercial and residential homeowners in New York City and the surrounding areas. The rule change, which comes shortly after Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed to expand the NY-Sun Initiative to 2023, aims to make solar even more affordable.
While the exact rebate value is yet to be determined, this is a significant step forward for the residential and commercial solar markets in New York. The rule change will allow large energy users to offset more of their electric loads with solar power, and cut back considerably on electricity expenditures to ConEdison.
Currently, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) offers a direct rebate of $1.40 per watt of solar power installed for both residential and commercial entities. The rebate, which is currently capped at $9,800 (7 kilowatts) for residential customers and $70,000 (50 kilowatts) for commercial customers, allows solar developers to significantly reduce the cost of installation, resulting in better, more robust savings for the solar-powered building.
Under the regulatory change approved by the PSC, customers will now be eligible to receive rebates for systems up to 25 kilowatts on residences, and 200 kilowatts on commercial buildings.
Check back for an announcement regarding the exact rebate levels under the new rule.
